A Guide To Thin-Crust Pizza

All thin crust pizza is not created equally. Here is a guide to the three main types of thin-crust pizza: Neapolitan Pizza, New York-Style Pizza, St. Louis Pizza and flatbread pizza.

Neapolitan Pizza

Many people associate thin-crust pizza with Italy. Italian thin-crust pizza is generally Neapolitan pizza. This type of pizza crust is really thin and has a slightly, but not overdone, crisp texture to it.

To be a real Neapolitan pizza, the dough has to be kneaded by hand and not prepared in a mechanical way at all. It also has to be cooked in an oven that is powered by wood and domed shaped. There are even thickness measurements that are followed as well. This is a true Italian thin-crust pizza, with the most classic style of Neapolitan pizza being a Margherita pizza.

New York

New York also has its own type of thin-style pizza. This type of crust is made out of bread flour that has lots of gluten and is said to have a unique flavor due to the special make-up of the water in New York City.

New York pizza  crust is a little crispy around the outer edge of the pizza. However, the inside of the pizza crust is thin yet soft. The crust is designed to be flexible, so you can take your large wedge, fold it in half, and eat it up like a true New Yorker. This type of pizza is almost aways cut into big, oversized wedges that you almost have to fold in order to eat. Or you can take a fork to it, but you will stand out on the East Coast.

Flatbread

Flatbread pizza has become increasingly popular because the crust is really thin and light, and doesn't have the heft of a regular pizza. It is often used to make more appetizer or personalized sized pizza; it is rarely used to make regular-sized pizza.

Flatbread pizza is often cut into square or rectangular shape, making it more of a finger-food style thin crust pizza.

St. Louis

St. Louis is also known for its own distinctive thin crust style pizza. This style of thin-crust pizza uses unleavened dough that creates a crust that is really crispy and has the texture of a cracker. This type of pizza is great for individuals who want a really thin and crispy crust, from the outer edge all the way to the middle of the pie.

The pizza is generally round-shaped. However, St. Louis style pizza is generally cut into either squares or rectangles instead of the traditional triangle shaped slices. For more information about pizza, check out Ynot Italian
